What can you come to us with?
Relationships and couples
You can be in a relationship and feel alone in it. You can also repeat the same patterns for years, in one relationship after another. At the Unique Psychological Practice in Warsaw we deal with both: we work with couples and individually with people who want to change the way they build closeness.
Book a visitCrises happen in every relationship and do not mean that it is over. More often they signal that the way you have been together no longer matches who you are now. A change of life stage, the birth of a child, a move or overload at work can all disturb a delicate balance.
Difficulties in relationships rarely come from a lack of feeling. Usually what lies behind them is an entrenched way of responding to tension: one person pushes, the other withdraws, and both feel overlooked. Recognising that mechanism is often the first step to breaking the vicious circle.
You do not have to be on the brink of separation to seek help - the earlier you come, the more options remain.
Does this look like your situation?
You can come as a couple or on your own - both paths make sense.
Talk to a psychologist- You keep returning to the same argument, which never ends in a solution.
- Your conversations are limited to practical matters, and you steer around everything else.
- Although you are in a relationship, you feel lonely.
- The lack of understanding grows, and attempts to clear things up end in more distance.
- Trust has been broken and you do not know whether it can be rebuilt.
- You wonder whether to stay or to leave, and you cannot decide.
- After a break-up you find it hard to return to your own life.
- The same pattern repeats in one relationship after another.
- Closeness awakens fear in you or an urge to run.
What can we help you work through?

Crisis in a relationship
What it is
A crisis in a relationship is a state in which partners stop understanding each other and closeness gives way to distance. Sometimes a specific event precedes it, but more often it builds imperceptibly, through years of small disappointments.
How it may show up
Repeated arguments without resolution, a lack of communication, jealousy, loneliness within the relationship, routine. Differences in needs around intimacy, which are hard to talk about directly, are also common.
How therapy helps
We look at what exactly is not working in your communication and help you develop ways of talking in which both sides feel heard. We offer both couples therapy and individual consultations.

Infidelity
What it is
Infidelity damages the foundation of a relationship, which is a sense of safety. Reactions can be extreme and changeable: from wanting to leave at once to wanting to save the relationship at any cost.
How it may show up
Intrusive thoughts about the details, a need for control, a loss of self-worth in the person who was betrayed, shame and guilt in the person who was unfaithful, and decision paralysis on both sides.
How therapy helps
We do not decide for you whether the relationship is worth saving. What we do is help you regain the ability to talk, understand what led to this situation and make the decision consciously rather than under the influence of emotion. If you decide to rebuild, we work on restoring trust step by step.

Separation and divorce
What it is
Separation means losing not only the other person but also your plans, your daily routine and part of your own identity. That is why the reactions can resemble grief, regardless of who made the decision.
How it may show up
Mood swings, a sense of failure, difficulty returning to daily life, obsessive analysis of the past, fear of loneliness. The person who left often struggles with guilt on top of that.
How therapy helps
We accompany you in making the decision if you are still hesitating, and through the period that follows a separation. We work on rebuilding your own life and on making sure the experience does not turn into lasting mistrust towards future relationships.

Difficulties in relationships with others
What it is
The way we build relationships takes shape over years and usually operates outside conscious control. Difficulties appear not only in romantic relationships but also in friendship, family and work - wherever closeness, trust or the ability to say no is needed.
How it may show up
Fear of closeness, difficulty setting boundaries and being assertive, giving in to other people's expectations, a sense of being taken advantage of, trouble trusting and the repetition of patterns in one relationship after another.
How therapy helps
We look at what gets triggered in you in close relationships and where it comes from. We work on the ability to express needs and set boundaries without guilt.
How do we work on relationships?
There are two ways to approach work on a relationship: individually or together with your partner. During the first consultation we establish which makes more sense in your situation.
- 1
We settle on the form of the meetings
We check whether couples therapy, individual work or both in parallel will serve your situation better.
- 2
We identify the pattern
We look for the recurring shape: the moment when a conversation turns into a conflict, and the reactions that fuel it on both sides.
- 3
We introduce change
You learn other ways of expressing needs and responding to tension - first in the sessions, then in everyday situations.
It is not worth waiting for a serious crisis

Most frequent questions about difficulties in relationships
Is it worth seeing a psychologist about problems in a relationship?
Yes, and there is no need to wait for a serious crisis. Many couples come only once the conflict has lasted for years - acting earlier usually leaves more options. A consultation also helps distinguish passing tension from a deeper problem.
How do I know whether a relationship is toxic?
One signal is constant tension, doubting your own reading of a situation, giving up contacts and interests, and the belief that everything depends on how you behave. It is worth remembering that calling a relationship toxic solves nothing in itself. What matters more is looking at what specifically happens in it and what options you have.
What does couples therapy look like?
Both partners attend the sessions, and the therapist does not take anyone's side. We start by getting to know each person's perspective, then look for the recurring pattern in your communication and work on changing it. Sometimes one individual meeting with each person at the beginning is helpful.
Can I come for a consultation before deciding to separate?
Yes, and it is a frequent reason for coming. A consultation is not about persuading you towards any solution but about putting in order everything that bears on the decision. Some people decide to stay, some to leave, and many of them above all need room to think it over without pressure.
My partner does not want to go to therapy. What can I do?
You can start on your own. Changing the way you respond to tension affects the dynamic of the whole relationship, even if the other person is not taking part. Some couples come to therapy later, once one side starts reacting differently.
